A. Culture Values for Nigeria and the United States The cultural differences between the United States and Nigeria values play a vital role in the difficulties for Arik Air. A company would need to adopt their strategy for the country they are operating in. The Geert Hofstede webpage shows Nigeria scores higher than the United States on power distance, a score of 80 on the Geert Hofstede webpage. Power distance is defined as the extent to which the less powerful members of institutions and organizations within a country expect and accept that power is distributed unequally (Adekola Sergi, 2007). In Nigeria’s collectivist culture demonstrates ther e is a greater reliance on rules and standards of behavior, and promotion criteria focus on age and loyalty rather individual ability. The decision making process is centralized and are made on consensus rather than debate, and promotion decisions take account of the employee’s in-group, management is the management of groups. The United States has a high score of 91 in individualism. Americans are accustomed to doing business with people they do not know acting independently, and communication is informal and direct. Americans will approach their prospective counterparts in order to seek information. Hierarchy in the United States is established for convenience, superiors are accessible and managers rely on individual employees and teams for their expertise. They are loose knit and live by the model of not relying too much on authorities for support (Geert-Hofstede.com, 2015). The Nigerian population is low in uncertainty avoidance along with the United States. These two countries are similar in style for uncertainty avoidance.
